Visit Shanghai

China’s biggest city is known for both its colonial past and its rule as a powerhouse of economic growth. Beijing's Highlights

Explore Xian

One of China’s four ancient capitals, Xian sits at the eastern end of the Silk Road. Its most popular attraction is the Terracotta Army at Li Shan Mountain, built by China’s first emperor Qin Shi Huang to protect him during the afterlife. Discovered in 1974, this great feat of 3rd century artistry includes thousands of life-sized clay soldiers as well as chariots, horses, acrobats, strongmen and musicians all carved in intricate detail. This UNESCO-listed site really is an astonishing sight to behold.

Great Wall and Terracotta Army

Visiting the Great Wall on a China holiday is something that should be high on your list of things to do. Built more than 2,000 years ago as a barrier against foreign invaders, it stretches for more than 5,500 miles across plateaus, deserts, mountains and grasslands. Another must-see site is the incredible Terracotta Army at Li Shan Mountain, one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century. It’s here that you’ll see thousands of life-size terracotta soldiers, horses and chariots believed to date back to the Qin Dynasty (211-206 BC). They were interred with the first Qin emperor and form a dazzling display of Chinese military power.

Yangtze River Cruise

Always popular with visitors to China is a cruise along the famous Yangtze River, offering a relaxing way to see many wonderful sights. You’ll visit the site of the mighty Three Gorges Dam – the largest hydroelectric dam in the world – and sail through the Three Gorges Dam locks. Of all the Canaries, La Palma sings the softest. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura shout about what they’ve got, which means purring La Palma often gets overshadowed. But that’s where its appeal lies. This quiet island is far from Spain's madding crowd, and you won’t find any of the tell-tale marks of mass tourism here.

La Palma’s main holiday resorts are low-rise numbers. In Fuencaliente, on the island’s south coast, you’ll find a splash of whitewashed houses, surrounded by pine forests and vineyards. Los Cancajos, on the east coast, is probably the island’s most built-up resort. It’s attracted the lion’s share of development because it’s fronted by a black sand beach. But, even here, hotels don’t get much taller than three storeys. And, just like in Fuencaliente, the manmade is quarantined by wide-open countryside.

La Palma’s trump card is its scenery. In 1983 the entire island was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente, in the centre of La Palma, is the island at its most unspoilt. This 46.9 square-kilometre nature reserve is a tapestry of pine forests, waterfalls, freshwater spring and walking trails. Elsewhere, the island is daubed with volcano-scapes. The volcano trail in the south will take you along volcanic rims and through gaping craters.

With a landscape as varied as La Palma’s, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the to-do list here is just as diverse.

From glass-bottomed catamaran cruises and dolphin watching to volcano hiking tours, there are loads of activities to get stuck in to. Almost all of them make the most of the unspoiled island scenery, too. And when night falls, you don’t need to be an amateur astronomer or photographer to make the most of stargazing here. Head to Roque de los Muchachos – the highest point on the island – for the best vantage point.

The Serbian Capital, Belgrade

Lee has just returned from a 4 night break to the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

Flying Air Serbia from Heathrow (who were actually very good) a short 20 minute transfer to the city centre.

The city can be explored easily on foot but an e-bike tour or small group walking tour is the best way to explore and learn about Belgrade’s fascinating history up to the present day.

The main shopping street hosts all the well know stores and designer outlets along with a huge shopping mall. Just off the Main Street you will find local stores along with frequent markets, day and evening entertainment and street vendors.

Stroll to the bohemian quarter for cobbled streets, local food and drinks, all very reasonably priced. Lots of local dishes to try and local drinks…

The city also has lots of green open space and huge park areas. With the rivers Danube and Sava flowing through the city a boat trip is a must.

Many lakes surround the city including those with artificial beaches, ideal for cooling off in the summer.

Belgrade really did exceed his expectations, so different from many other cities that are in danger of looking the same. If you enjoy local culture, history, parks, rivers, lakes, shops and very well priced food and drink Belgrade should be on your list.

European Entry Exit System

European Entry Exit System (EES) - 12 October 2025

The EES, which comes into force from 12 October 2025 for UK and other non-EU nationals, will require travellers to register at the border by scanning their passport and having their fingerprints and photograph taken.

EES will be a requirement when entering Schengen area countries including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, as well as EU countries, but it will not be required when travelling to Ireland and Cyprus.

British travellers will need to register on their first visit to a participating country after EES is introduced. This registration is valid for a rolling three-year period or until the passport expires.

Children under 12 will not be fingerprinted but all travellers, including babies, will be photographed and have digital records created.

On exit, and for subsequent entries and exits to or from a participating country, travellers will only need to scan their passport and provide either their fingerprints or a photograph at the border.

European countries using EES will phase this new system in over six months, meaning different ports may have varying requirements until April 2026. This should allow for a gradual implementation that minimises disruption, particularly at peak periods.

For travellers using the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or Eurostar at St Pancras International, the process will take place at the border before they leave the UK.

They say to get to where you’re going, you need to know where you came from...

This is evident in Nova Scotia where the locals take great pride in preserving the history and tradition of their past, with the influences of Mi’kmaq, Acadian, African Nova Scotian, Celtic and Gaelic cultures still present to this day.

On the Atlantic coast of Canada less than 7hrs flight from London to Halifax, the province of Nova Scotia is a year-round destination.

The Beauty of Malta

Magnificent Madeira

As we approach the winter snow-sports season it is anticipated to be one of the busiest! With many not heading to the slopes over the last couple of seasons demand is high, which has also pushed up prices.

If you are tied to the school holidays our top tips would be to look at the week before Christmas or the first week of Easter although with ski conditions variable look out for the higher altitude resorts or those with a glacier for guaranteed skiing.

Lee's Skiing in Sestriere, Italy

With a 2 hour flight from London followed by a 2 hour transfer from Turin you reach the Western Alps and the Vialattea ski area. Host of the 2006 Alpine Winter Olympics and a regular on the ski World Cup circuit.

A great allrounder, from beginners to advanced, non-ski activities and plenty of Après Ski. You will not only have the slopes of Sestriere but via an expansive and efficient lift network Sauze D’oulx, Sansicario, Cesana, Claviere, Pragolato and Montgenevre, over 400km of ski area all covered within your lift pass.

With the resort hight at 2035m and snow range up to 2823m it is as close to snow-sure you could possibly have. A good choice for early or late season skiing.

A wide choice of accommodation options await, Lee has stayed in many. From simple guest houses, apartments, chalets, luxury hotels and an all inclusive Club Med resort in Pragelato. Children are also well catered for with many properties featuring pools and some a kids club.

The resorts are purpose built ski-in / ski-out accommodation, so they're easy to find. If you are staying on the outskirts the resorts run an efficient bus service scheduled to meet the lifts opening at 9 and many closing at 4.

A Guide to Grenada

Grenada is one of the smaller Islands in the Caribbean just 21 miles long and 12 miles wide

The oval shaped island is also known as ‘The Island of Spice’, not just for its wide production of spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, but also due to its rich cultural tapestry.

Throughout the year, the small island plays host to many festivals and celebrations, including Spicemas, a 10-day festival in August full of food and parades.

There is something for everyone in Grenada, with its year-round warm weather there’s no bad time to visit this destination.

Grenada’s beaches boast picturesque views and crystal-clear water and they’re perfect for both families, couples, or solo travellers.

Those who are looking for an eco-adventure may prefer to explore the beautiful rainforest and view one of Grenada’s 18 waterfalls.

Be sure to pack some strong walking shoes – as many of the waterfalls are accessible via hikes of varied lengths.

Summer Skiing in Europe

With the impact of Coronavirus across Europe three months of the winter ski season has been lost leaving many disappointed with their annual ski trip being cancelled.

Have you considered skiing for your summer holiday?

Lee has been researching three of the best summer alpine resorts across Europe, perfect for that ski or boarding fix with the added benefit of summer activities and great cities to visit.

Austria – Hintertux

Just under 2 hours from Innsbruck the Hintertux is situated in the picturesque Tyrol region. It is one of the few European glaciers open 365 days a year and includes an impressive 14 miles of runs and 9 lifts.

Suitable for all abilities but for advance skiers you have particularly challenging terrain and a good scattering of black slopes. Learning to ski in Hintertux is also popular in the summer with the world-renowned Austrian Ski Schools operating under the summer sun.

It is a boarder’s paradise with half pipe, tabletops, rails and a great selection of jumps within the Betterpark area. You can also try your hand (or rear…) at tubing and tobogganing within the dedicated areas for all ages.

Skier, boarder or just in it for the scenery the bus service covering Hintertux is excellent and you must visit the Ice Palace (Google it, it’s amazing!)

You could also visit Salzburg, Vienna and Munich to make the most of your break.

Where to stay? You could stay in the small village of Hintertux or the larger resort of Mayrhofen where you have a great selection of hotels, from pensions to luxury plus great facilities in the town.

France – Les Deux Alpes

The Mont-de-lans glacier is open June to September with a funicular railway transporting skiers to the 8 mixed ability runs.

What really sets Les Deux Alpes apart is the snowskate zone. Famous for its slopestyle (Big Air, kickers, rails, tables – with accompanying music and photography) it also boasts some of the largest half pipes in Europe plus smaller pipes for those a little less daring.

Skiing may be a little limited compared to it’s Austrian and Swiss neighbours but has plenty to keep you occupied off the slopes with outdoor swimming pools, tennis, mountain walks, snow-shoeing, mountain biking, golf and a huge track if sliding down a mountain at speeds in excess of 40mph on a tray is your thing…

What Les Deux Alpes is lacking in runs it make up for in non-ski activities to make the perfect holiday for all.

Grenoble and Lyon are your closest airports or you could consider Eurostar from London, TGV Paris to Grenoble and then pick up a car.

Where to stay? A huge variety of accommodation from chalets to self-catering apartments to luxury hotels

Switzerland – Zermatt

Flying into Geneva or Zurich the 3+ hour transfer to Zermatt is well worth the while. It has an impressive 16 miles of skiing on the Theodul Glacier accessed by the Klein Matterhorn Cable Car.

With the largest and highest altitude summer skiing in Europe it attracts all levels of skier and boarder from across well including a good scattering of ‘A’ list celebrities. Long alpine tree lined runes, nursery slopes, children’s areas, freestyle zones and staggering scenery makes Zermatt a little pricier but for a few nights combined with a larger Swiss holiday is perfect.

Accommodation ranges from quaint Swiss chalets to world-leading hotels hosting Michelin starred restaurants. Do not panic if you are travelling on a budget, you can also pick up great value self-catering apartments in the village.

Whilst on the mountain pop over to Italy for lunch, Cervinia is a gentle ski away.

Not only do you have the mountains but you also have the Five Lakes, Rhone Valley, UNESCO Heritage Sites and the world famous Glacier Express Railway.

Lee’s Trip to Brussels & Bruges

Departing from Ebbsfleet on the 7am service Eurostar arrived in to Brussels mid-morning. It was the first time I travelled from Ebbsfleet and was impressed with the efficiency of the station. It took 1 hour 30 minutes from Woodbridge and parking for the three days was just £18.

On arrival in to Brussels Midi Station we walked the 30 minutes to the Radisson Blu Royal for a 2 night stay where we had immediate access to our room. The hotel is modern and spacious and soon to be renames as Radisson Collection Grand Place.

We pre-booked a 24 hour hop on hop off sightseeing tour which we boarded from central station. First was hopped off at the Atomium and paid to enter the structure to see the various exhibitions then to the Brussels Design Museum just opposite.

The hop on hop off is a great way to see the city. Taking in all the main sights we stopped at the Royal Palaces, European Quarter and the Grand Place where we also had to see Mannekin Pis.

Grand Place is the central hub of Brussels with its opulent blend of gothic baroque buildings illuminated after dark and with a laser show to classic music every evening at 10pm. Lots of high end restaurants are situated in Grand Place but of you want to people watch without spending so much you also have a Starbucks…

Art and culture is abundant in Brussels with the largest concentration of Art Nuevo in Europe, over 100 museums plus expansive green spaces.

The tram network is one of the largest in the world and many of the older trams are exported to the USA with some being used in San Francisco.

Whilst in Brussels we also sampled the Choco history museum and participated in a chocolate making masterclass, we snacked at the famous waffle house and spent at little time exploring Avenue Louise and the many designer outlets.

Just 30 minutes from Brussels you arrive in Bruges. Canals, cobbles streets, medieval buildings is really is an amazing city and worth of a night or two. We experiences a canal trip, more chocolate and spent hours looking at the fascinating buildings and town squares.

Overall although only 2 nights a great experience of which I would certainly recommend.

Top tips…

Consider booking 1 night in Bruges and 2 nights in Brussels. Take the train to Ghent for the afternoon.

Simone’s Tauck Danube River Cruise

Stepping out of the arrivals hall at Munich airport to find a smart taxi waiting to whisk us off to the classy MS Savor in the pretty town of Regensburg, Germany was a perfect and efficient start to our trip with Tauck.

We were blown away at how beautiful the ship was everything looked sparkling clean and all the lounges and public areas looked pristine. After a hot towel and fresh lemonade we were shown to our cabin which was surprisingly large, the bed was huge and the decoration tasteful. After unpacking we ventured onto the top deck and this is where we spent a lot of our time while cruising along, either soaking in the hot pool, playing golf or being looked after by the friendly bar staff who are always on hand to pamper you. The staff always seemed to know what you would like at which time offering you hot chocolate with rum and giving you blankets when there was a chill in the air or a lovely iced water when the sun was shining. We also enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Wachau Valley and passing through the various locks.

There were a lot of highlights on the river cruise but I absolutely fell in love with Passau the city of three rivers where we attended a concert in the Cathedral which houses the largest organ in the world, it was surreal. Another favourite of ours was Durnstein, we decided to climb up to the castle which was extremely hard going this was worth it though for the stunning views from the top. Concentration Camp Mauthausen was a very moving and emotional experience and somewhere I will never forget. I would highly recommend the River Cruise for the service, fine dining and unique cultural experiences that only Tauck can offer.

Abi’s South African Safari Adventure

When I was offered the chance to experience a Safari in South Africa of course I jumped at the chance however as this would be my first Safari I wasn’t sure what to expect but was certainly ready for the adventure!

After a comfortable flight with South African Airways to Port Elizabeth via Jo’Burg we were taken by road to Kariega Game Reserve 4* to stay for 2 nights then on to Shamwari Game Reserve 5* for a further 2 night stay.

A Safari is a unique experience and generally the itinerary would start with a wake up call at 5am off for the first Game Drive of the day followed by breakfast at 10am then leisure time until 4pm and the next game drive until the sun sets when it is time for a Sundowner before heading back for dinner.

Accommodation on a Safari is usually in a lodge with all the home comforts and a ranger allocated to you for your entire stay their knowledge and expertise is amazing and you really get to know and understand the wildlife in depth, if you have a particular interest they are keen to focus on that for you and want you have the best experience possible.

On our first game drive, I immediately saw Giraffes wandering across the plains what a sight for tired eyes, my goal was to see Giraffes and Elephants and on that one afternoon I was lucky enough to come across both. At Kariega the reserve is split in to two with the predators on one side and the non – predators on the other, the landscape is quite unique with the flat plains for the Impala, Giraffes and Antelope to graze on then the dense bush perfect hiding place for the Rhino and Lions.

Shamwari is home to the Big 5 – Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino and I was able to see all except the Leopard who tends to be spotted during the night so quite rare to find, the reserve was much larger and all Animals together so a very natural environment with the opportunity to watch the Lioness hunting the Warthog.

Once we arrived at Shamwari Game Reserve it was clear to see that conservation is key, this is the home of the charity Born Free, they have their own rehabilitation centre for orphaned and injured Animals the staff are very passionate to their cause and it was extremely sad to hear the plight of the Rhinos and the awful poaching situation that if continues at this rate the Rhino will be extinct in the wild by 2021.

Lee’s Trip to India – Rail Journey on the Deccan Odyssey

India conjures up all sorts of images for me so I really didn’t know what to expect when I was given an invitation to take a trip on-board the luxury train Deccan Odyssey from Delhi to Mumbai…but I was about to find out….

After travelling from London in business class with Emirates on the flagship A380, the largest aircraft in the fleet with the most up to date on-board entertainment, flat bed’s, cocktail bar, mood sensitive lighting and amazing food & drink I really arrived into Delhi feeling raring to go!

On arrival I was met by my guide Brijesh armed with a mobile phone and WIFI dongle to keep me up to date with the world, his caring attitude and personal knowledge was proven to be second to none and before boarding the Train I was given a tour of Old & New Delhi by a charity who help the Street Children of the city by encouraging them to become guides and take tourists to show them the sights as a paid job which can give them greater opportunities for a better life. In Old Delhi the sights and sounds are like nothing on earth with people, rickshaws, mopeds and animals jostling for space in the narrow alleys, in contrast to New Delhi which is now a modern city area housing the consulates and financial offices.

Once on-board the Train after a traditional Indian welcome and a rose petal path to the carriage I had the chance to settle into my luxurious, spacious en – suite cabin with décor reminiscent of a regal era but with all the modern amenities you would expect in a first class hotel along with a personal attendant to ensure you have everything you need. The Deccan Odyssey offers gourmet dining always with a choice of Indian or European cuisine over four courses and fine wines with a Bar for a pre-dinner drink or nightcap. The service on- board was very attentive and although the surroundings are very grand the atmosphere is relaxed.

Our first stop was Rathanbore National Park where we were taken on safari game drive in search of Tigers who failed to make an appearance however we did see Monkey’s, Crocodiles, Zebra and many different Bird species. The views across the National Park are spectacular and well worth a visit.

Next on to Agra the home of the Taj Mahal which was in fact a gift of love from the Emperor Shah Jahan to his Wife which took over 20 years to complete, of course an amazing sight as expected and the intricate marble detailing is amazing. Another must see is the Agra Fort set in beautiful gardens which still functions today as a military base.

Jaipur known as the ‘Pink City’ due to pink sandstone carvings at the Palace of Winds which was just a façade of a Palace for the Ladies of Royalty to spy on the everyday life in the city and Jodphur known as the ‘Blue City’ with the vividly painted houses were the following two days of sightseeing before heading onto Udaipur.

Udaipur the City on the Lake was my favourite destination it is set on the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola the atmosphere there was much calmer with everywhere accessible by boat or on foot, a walking tour is the ideal way to see the Old City which is home to various street traders in a more superior environment than other parts of India, the City Palace and the Crystal Gallery. If you wanted to escape for a few day’s here the Taj Palace on the Lake would be an ideal 5* retreat only reached by boat and secluded from the city life.

After visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Champaner –Pavagadh Archaeological Park housing palaces, mosques, tombs & temples all dating from the 8th to 14th centuries along with a high tea at the Laxmi Vilas Palace it was onto my final destination Mumbai.

Now the last two days of my trip were spent in Mumbai which I would say is the most westernised city with lots of British influence we even saw red London Buses and traffic lights! Of course many historic landmarks to see here and one final highlight for me was to stay at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel as featured recently on the BBC 1 television show.

Lee’s Trip to Sri Lanka & Maldives

Sri Lanka has always intrigued me so I was very pleased to be given the opportunity to take a trip to see what the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’ has to offer.

After a very comfortable 12 hour direct flight with Sri Lankan Airlines to the capital Colombo we set off on a 2 hour drive to the fortified city of Galle one of Sri Lanka’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites with some beautiful colonial architecture and views of the ocean I would recommend staying at the Fortress Resort close to the city with amazing service and right on the beach.

Sri Lanka has an amazing mix of cultural experiences alongside wildlife adventures and I was lucky enough to experience a safari this is a must do especially if you want to encounter the majestic Elephants in their natural habitat. At the Udawalawe National Park they strive to rehabilitate as many Elephants as they can and host a vast number of mammals, birds and reptiles.

My last stop was the resort of Kalutara which is off the beaten track and offers a unique location where river meets the ocean perfect place to relax and take in the scenery, locals here encourage you to be a responsible tourist and I took part in a beach clean which is one of the areas latest initiatives.

I have to say one of the highlights of my visit to Sri Lanka was the people they really welcome visitors always with a smile and are so keen to show you their country and cultures.

Before returning home I took the short flight from Colombo to Male in the Maldives to experience two of the stunning Islands firstly the larger resort of Kuramathi which offers a diverse range of activities and is a haven for foodies then onto the smaller Island of Baros a luxurious escape with amazing diving experiences and outdoor dining on the lagoon both easily reached by speedboat transfers. The Maldives offers a truly unique experience where you feel at peace and away from the stresses of everyday life – everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime!

Abi’s Borneo Adventure

Borneo is in the top 3 worldwide destinations for those travellers in search of wildlife and adventure.

To get there flights connect via Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan with Malaysian Airlines who pride themselves on great service and brand new aircraft. To make the most of your trip it is advisable to split your stay between Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Kuala Lumpur which is exactly what I did on my recent visit.

The beautiful Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort & Spa is situated on a vast expense of beach and is a great option for your stay in KK the rooms are spacious with lovely ocean views, 2 swimming pools, water sport’s centre and choice of bars & restaurants the sunset bar was amazing with the signature cocktail served in a coconut shell. Adjacent to the hotel is Rasa Ria nature reserve with lookout tower, a 5am trek through the jungle will take you to see the sunrise at 90 metres above sea level and a breath taking view of Mt Kinabalu there are plenty of activities including the canopy trail to discover.

A short flight from KK will take you to Sandakan and the Borneo Nature Lodge this is a back to basics experience staying on the Kinabatangan River the lodge can only be reached by boat and you will have the opportunity to view crocodiles, pigmy elephants, monkey’s and various birds in their natural habitat, orangutans are present here in the wild but are not easily spotted however a visit to the Sepilok Orangutan rehabilitation centre is essential to understand how we can protect and care for this endangered species who behave so much like us humans not surprising as their DNA is 93% the same as ours!

I ended my experience with a 2 night stay in Kuala Lumpur at the centrally located 4* Park Royal Hotel I thought KL was an affluent city with plenty of culture, the hotels in the city are of a very high standard and all within easy reach of the Petronas Twin Towers standing at 452 metres tall they dominate the skyline and you will find plenty of sky bars with a great view, shopping malls to rival Dubai alongside mosques, temples and shrines to visit. Afternoon tea at the 5* Majestic Hotel is a lovely treat.

Lee’s Trip to Vancouver, Seattle & Iceland

I have just returned from a great trip visiting three amazing destinations Vancouver, Seattle & Iceland all very interesting and highly recommended…

Flying with Icelandair was easy with a smooth transit in Reykjavik en -route to my first stop in Vancouver for a 4 night stay at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel a luxury 5* hotel in a great location for exploring the city either on foot or using the public transport, highlights to visit Capilano Suspension Bridge reaching across the Capliano River at 230 feet high, Canada’s largest Aquarium, sightseeing tours of Stanley Park and the top neighbourhoods of Yaletown, Chinatown and Gastown. I particularly enjoyed the gastronomic delights of Granville Island, foodie tours and beer / wine tastings are very popular here, the Canadian Dollar rate is very good at the moment so I found it very reasonable to eat out here.

After a 2 hour ferry crossing from Vancouver to Victoria on Vancouver Island we checked into the grand chateau style hotel Fairmont Empress dating back to 1908, this is ideally based close to the harbour and all the attractions of Victoria. Whale Watching is a must here and I was lucky enough to see many Orca Whales on our excursion aboard the ‘Orca Spirit Adventure’ check out our Deben Travel Facebook page for some great pictures.

Getting to Seattle is easy again via a ferry crossing from Victoria (ESTA is required to enter the USA) once there the best way to get around is using the Seattle Monorail built in 1962 or again on foot, to get the best view of Seattle visit Space Needle a tower 520 feet tall with panoramic 360 degree views of the city. If like me you have interest in Aviation the Boeing Future of Flight Tour gives you an insight on how Aircraft are designed and manufactured – well worth a visit.

The state of Washington is very picturesque and home to various Islands and National Parks which can again be reached easily by car or ferry.

On my return journey to the UK I took the opportunity to include a stopover in Reykjavik.

Iceland is home to the Northern Lights, Blue Lagoon, Gullfoss Waterfall and various national park areas complete with thermal springs and geysers so lot’s to pack in to a short stay but it can all be done from Reykjavik which is lovely little city with everything centrally located, the cost of living is pretty expensive so it is best to pre – book your excursions before you arrive. Highlight for me was relaxing in the Blue Lagoon before catching my flight home after a tiring but very memorable 10 day trip.

Simone’s Trip to Jersey

Simone from Deben Travel has just returned from a fantastic trip to the beautiful Island of Jersey, the largest and most populated of the group of Channel Islands .She was very impressed as she lets us know the main highlights of her trip with Premier Holidays. This group of Channel Islands also consists of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and some smaller Islands which are not habitable. The total area of the Islands is 198 km square, small but perfect in every way.

Departing from our local airports Southend and Norwich, Jersey is a 50 minute hop on a small but comfortable aircraft and on arrival you cannot believe you so close to such a scenic and interesting destination.

From departing the airport you will see the difference in scenery from the open fields to small winding country lanes all with local farmers digging up their famous Jersey Royal Potatoes and the local Jersey cows making the sought after cream for your afternoon tea’s which are a must.

Further along Jersey and arriving at the coast which is only 3 miles from the airport and consists of long stretches of pristine sandy beaches which turquoise waters lap against. There are also rugged areas and many places of local interest which include the fascinating Jersey tunnels and the castles at Gorey and St Aubin’s bay which have defended the Island for more than 300 years.

Moving onto St Hellier with its amazing shopping and upmarket boutique hotels which include some of the best restaurants on the Island, many are Michelin star eateries. Jersey is definitely a place for good fresh, local food and top class beverages watching the sunset go down behind the designer yachts. Don’t take my word for it try it for yourselves, it is so near and easy and is known to have much better weather than the rest of the British Isles without travelling for hours.

Hannah’s Trip to Abu Dhabi

I have recently returned from a fantastic trip to Abu Dhabi- a destination that offers year round sunshine, golden beaches, history and culture to appeal to all ages…

Flying with Etihad from Heathrow I arrived into Abu Dhabi airport before taking a 15 minute journey to my first stop at the Saadiyat Rotana Resort on Saadiyat Island. This 5* luxury hotel only opened in March 2018, and is located on one of the best known private beaches in the capital yet still only a 15 minute drive from the city centre. Although its beachfront location made it easy to relax and enjoy the winter sunshine, the Louvre (a newly opened art and civilisation museum which is also famously known for also being located in Paris) was only minutes away by car.

After a relaxing night on Saadiyat Island, it was time to explore the local area starting with a visit to Zaya Nurai Private Island. Only accessible by a 20 minute speedboat transfer this natural resort offered complete bliss and a retreat away from the bustling city centre, and was complete with 34 villas all with surrounding views of the ocean. I would highly recommend this resort to honeymooners or if you are visiting for a special occasion, as the resort is also accessible for a day trip to relax and enjoy the cuisine on the island.

After a short journey from Saadiyat Island, we then checked into the Ritz Carlton Grand Canal, an elegant hotel that has breath taking views overlooking the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This hotel was also located on a private stretch of beach and offered one of the biggest pools in Abu Dhabi, yet has the history of Abu Dhabi on its doorstep. Visiting the mosque is a must here, as well as many of the attractions around the resort- such as Yas Island, Ferrari World, Warner Bros World and the Corniche (water front). As I was eager to explore some of the adventure in Abu Dhabi I visited both Ferrari World and Warner Bros World- both which I would recommend to adrenaline seekers wanting to experience the fastest roller coaster in the world, or families wanting to immerse themselves in the set of their favourite film.

After a day of exploring Abu Dhabi’s newest attractions I then checked into the famous Yas Viceroy Hotel for my final 2 night stay- a stylish hotel that is built around the F1 track. From the modern interior, to being able to watch the cars race across the track whilst I was enjoying my breakfast, I couldn’t help but feel the vibrant and exciting atmosphere that this hotel really has to offer. Situated on Yas Marina it was easy to walk around the local area yet still hear the noises of the track in the distance, and was only a 20 minute drive to the city centre. I would highly recommend Yas Island to be able to experience the excitement of the F1 track from balcony, and it was a memorable way to end a brilliant and unforgettable 4 night trip.
